On Monday morning President Donald Trump tweeted out “Has @BubbaWallace apologized to all of those great NASCAR drivers & officials who came to his aid, stood by his side, & were willing to sacrifice everything for him, only to find out that the whole thing was just another HOAX? That & Flag decision has caused the lowest ratings EVER!”

Last month a noose was reportedly found in Bubba Wallace’s garage stall at Talladega Superspeedway in Lincoln, Alabama. This came less than two weeks after Bubba Wallace, who is NASCAR’s only Black full-time driver, had successfully campaigned to ban the Confederate flag at NASCAR events and properties.

After a full investigation, the Federal

Bureau of Investigations (FBI) announced that the “noose” found in Bubba Wallace’s garage was not in fact a noose, but a “garage door pull rope fashioned like a noose.

Therefore, they announced that Bubba Wallace was not the victim of a hate crime.

Via a teleconference, NASCAR President Steve Phelps issued a statement concluding the findings of the noose found in Bubba Wallace’s garage.

Phelps explained, “Our ultimate conclusion for this investigation is to ensure that this never happens again, that no one walks by a noose without recognizing the potential damage it can do.” He continued, “Going forward, our efforts are best spent on making sure every competitor feels safe and every guest feels welcome. I would also like to reinforce that what we did see at Talladega in pre-race on Monday, our drivers, crews, and officials proudly demonstrated that we are united in the belief that there is no place for racism in our sport.”

NASCAR has stood by their actions, saying that given the information they would handle the situation the same way again.
