For Famke Janssen, best known for her role as Xenia Onatopp in the 1995's GoldenEye, the road to stardom has not been an easy one.
In 1984, Janssen moved to the United States to begin her career as a fashion model. She worked with big names such as Yves Saint Laurent, Victoria's Secret, and Chanel. Retiring from the modeling industry early, Janssen set out to pursue her acting career. She snagged her first role as Kamala on Star Trek: The Next Generation. After that, she won a few small roles in TV series like The Untouchables and Melrose Place. Her big break came when she auditioned for the role of Xenia Onatopp in the 1995 James Bond film.
"It's the one thing in my career that I should be the most grateful for. It catapulted me into stardom. I was a struggling actor, and that changed everything (USA Today, 2012)."
Janssen auditioned for the role with full force, embodying what she believed to be the most fierce Bond girl she could be. Not wanting to be just a "girl in a bathing suit," Janssen made her Bond girl character a force to be reckoned with. Not bad that her first major role was beside the famous Bond man, Pierce Brosnan. It is quite a privilege to be a Bond girl, and it's a title that sticks with her to this day.
Janssen says that the role, "opened doors that had not opened before." She went on to play roles such as Dr. Jean Grey/Phoenix in X-Men - another fantastic franchise - and most recently, Muriel in 2013's Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
The James Bond saga continues to smash box office's around the world. It is a great franchise to be apart of as it certainly sustains its longevity in the film world. With 23 movies as of this year, that makes the Bond franchise the longest and most successful films in history.
