At last the truth is out!

Barack Obama

President Barack Obama addressed the nation about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn., and became visibly emotional while discussing the tragedy that has so far taken the lives of seven adults and 20 children, apparently an entire classroom of kindergartners who were taught by the alleged killer's mother. | Photo: Getty Images | Barack Obama, President, Democrat, Tears, Cry, Sandy Hook,

Political paranoia makes sense of everything

For some people, no conspiracy is too implausible if it confirms what they want to believe.

For Birthers, Obama will never be a legitimate president because he literally isn't an American. For 9/11 Truthers, the attack was obviously an inside job by the US government. For some flat earthers, people only think the Earth is round because the "globularist" conspiracy in the American government has pulled the wool over their eyes.

In the newest conspiracy on the block, Sandy Hook Truthers have taken to the Internet to argue the school shooting was a fake. For example, Gene Rosen, who took in a half-dozen frightened kids after the shooting is, in the eyes of Truthers, obviously a professional actor faking compassion for the camera to advance the federal anti-gun agenda.

This is not a 21st century phenomena. In the 20th, we had political paranoia about Communists, Japanese-Americans, Arabs, Jews and secular humanists infiltrating and subverting America. Before that we had supposed conspiracies by the Illuminati and the Catholic Church.

Part of the appeal is that conspiracies help the world make sense. If you're a devout Christian who can't understand why people believe in evolution, a-ha! It's a secular humanist conspiracy to suppress the obvious truth of Genesis!

Unable to believe a handful of terrorists could successfully attack the Pentagon and bring down the Twin Towers? A-ha, obviously it could only happen if our government staged the whole thing (in 1941, people had the same reaction to Pearl Harbor, assuming it had to be due to espionage by Japanese-Americans working against us)!

Can't accept that we elected a president you didn't vote for? A-ha, Obama's not a legal president!

Don't want to believe that innocent people end up on Death Row? A-ha, Anne Coulter revealed a decade or so back that DNA evidence is just a conspiracy by the liberal media to free guilty people.

I suspect it's the same with Sandy Hook. Some people can support the Second Amendment without denying the reality of gun accidents and civilian shootings. Other gun-lovers prefer to believe there's no downside to guns'in the hands of good people, they're like magic wands that will never hurt an innocent person.

The massacre of children is hard to fit into that worldview. Rather than accept the ugly aspects of an America full of guns, it's easier to pretend there's no ugly side to accept. If Sandy Hook never happened or was all staged by the government, then there's no issue other than Obama's scheme to take all the guns and herd gun owners into the FEMA concentration camps.

Conspiracy theories transforms a world that makes no sense (how could That Man get into the White House? How come news reports aren't perfectly accurate? Why can't everyone see the Earth is flat?) into one that makes perfect sense. Okay, perfect if you ignore the strains, illogic and contradictions such theories invariably require.

And why wouldn't believers ignore them? Conspiracy theory has the added advantage of making believers smarter than everyone else. Sure, you sheeple who believe the government story may be fooled, but we're not dumb enough to believe the mainstream media. We see through the lies! The fact you don't believe us just shows how dumb you are (if you can't see the threat, you're part of the sheeple).

Conspiracies do happen. And governments certainly lie. The people who work to expose those lies have my respect.

The people who fantasize about elaborate webs of deceit that don't actually exist don't deserve any respect at all.And why wouldn't believers ignore them?
