On Sunday morning as many others were busy celebrating Easter with loved ones, President Donald Trump tweeted, "Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release. Getting more dangerous. "Caravans" coming. Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws NOW. NO MORE DACA DEAL!". A president who understands that our nation has laws that must be obeyed. Finally.
Thus, effectively the President killed any possibility of a deal to keep DACA in place. DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals was enacted by executive action by former President Barack Obama in 2012. DACA allows people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children to be protected from immediate deportation. The recipients of DACA protection, also known as, Dreamers, are able to request, "consideration of deferred action" for a period of two years.
President Donald Trump has stated in the past that he is willing to work with Democrats and Congress to pass legislation to allow Dreamers to remain in the United States. The Trump administration initially set a deadline of March 5th for the DACA program and called on Congress to pass legislation dealing with young immigrants.
President Trump followed his initial tweet on Sunday morning with several more messages, stating that Mexico was doing very little, and that Congress needed to immediately pass Border Legislation and use the "Nuclear Option". These tweets came after the President received reports that there was a caravan of about 1,000 Central Americans traveling through Mexico to the U.S. border. The migrants are hoping to either enter the U.S. illegally and undetected or to receive asylum.
Among the responses to the President's tweets are many from people pointing out that most of the people traveling north in the caravan are adults and therefore would not qualify under any version of DACA for legal residence in the United States. That makes sense, but it also seems to beg the central question.
Why exactly are we providing these "Dreamers" with continued stay in the U.S. while there are many others waiting in line, to enter America the legal way?
These "Dreamers" were brought here illegally as children by their parents, and many "Dreamers" are now in their twenties. It has been enough time for them to apply for either a green card or to begin the process to become a U.S. citizen.
In order to apply to become a U.S. citizen you must meet some general requirements first: Be at least 18-years old, a lawful green card hold for 5 years, have basic knowledge of English, show knowledge of the Pledge of Allegiance, show knowledge of U.S. history and government, etc.
After which you will go through a variety of steps to become a citizen, which roughly takes anywhere from 6 months- 2 years.
Instead they are relying upon the unconstitutional executive order passed by former President Barack Obama, in order to stay here.
As young children, parents generally teach their children that they will be rewarded for good behavior and following the rules, while they will be punished for bad behavior. Our government however is doing the exact opposite. Our government seems to be bending over backwards to ensure that people who have entered the U.S. illegally, should be granted permission to stay here. Our government bends over backwards to support and reward rule breakers.
Whether you think President Donald Trump's statements about DACA are fair or unfair, one thing is for certain we have become a country that more increasingly rewards those who have no respect for our immigration laws. We need a better process on who we are allowing to come into our country.
We have a President in office who not only understands that our government should no longer be making exceptions for rule breakers, but that our government has a duty to enforce the laws that protect our country. We have a President in office who understands that it is not his job to reward those who have chosen to bypass the laws, but that our nations laws must be obeyed.
