A new poll released on Tuesday showed that an overwhelming majority of Americans are strongly in favor of bringing in military forces to help back up police officers as they struggle to contain protests turned into violent riots, over the death of George Floyd.

According to a poll by Morning Consult, 58% of registered voters support bringing in the U.S. military to help supplement police forces. 33% of voters strongly support, while 25% of voters somewhat support bringing in military forces.

The poll also found that 19% of registered voters strongly oppose the use of military forces to supplement police forces, while 11% somewhat oppose.

While the majority of Baby Boomers and GenXers support bringing in military forces, the majority of GenZers – those born between 1997 and 2012 opposed bringing in military forces with 35% strongly opposing, while 16% somewhat opposed.

Demonstrations began peacefully in Minneapolis, the day after George Floyd died after an officer knelt on his neck for nearly 9 minutes. However, demonstrations soon turned into violent riots as acts of looting, arson, and assault were committed.

So far the National Guard has been deployed in at least 23 states in order to quell the fury of rioters. According to CNN, as of Monday morning 17,000 National Guard soldiers were deployed.

As the protests have continued to take a turn to violence and anarchy, President Donald Trump and members of his administration including Attorney General William P. Barr, have spoken out against the continued riots and destruction.

Attorney General Barr issued a statement saying, “It is time to stop watching the violence and to confront and stop it. The continued violence and destruction of property endangers the lives and livelihoods of others, and interferes with the rights of peaceful protestors, as well as other citizens.”

On June 2, President Trump tweeted “New York City put on an 11:00 P.M. CURFEW last night. No wonder they ripped the place apart. Should be 7:00 P.M. CALL UP THE NATIONAL GUARD. #SAVENYC”

The President has on more than one occasion tweeted his criticism over New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s handling of the riots as looting and vandalism spread through Manhattan with people vandalizing storefronts such as Macy’s, Nike, and small businesses.

In a speech from Cape Canaveral, Florida President Trump explained “These are not acts of peaceful protests….. these are acts of domestic terror. The destruction of innocent life and the spilling of innocent blood is an offense to humanity and a crime against God. American needs creation, not destruction. Cooperation not contempt. Security not anarchy. Healing not hatred. Justice not chaos. This is our mission and we will succeed 100%.”
