U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar (D, MN) is back in the news for a variety of reasons…
Calls to dismantle U.S. economic and political systems
First, she continues to call for “defund the police” and has added now added that we must dismantle our “economy and political systems” in the video below.
Omar, in a speech in Minnesota, said: “We cannot stop at the criminal justice system. We must begin the work of dismantling the whole system of oppression wherever we find it.”
Senator Marsha Blackburn, (R, TN), called for Omar’s resignation Tuesday, saying “Ilan Omar took an oath to defend and protect the Constitution, not shred it. Omar and her Marxist comrades are a threat to our Democracy. Omar should resign.”
Accusations of financial improprieties…
This morning, Fox News is reporting that Omar paid $878,000 to her new husband’s consulting firm. The arrangement to pay her husband’s firm for campaign work is possibly not illegal, as “the 1960’s federal anti-nepotism statute that prohibits members of Congress from hiring relatives for government jobs but does not block family members from doing campaign work, a former chief ethics lawyer from the administration of former President George W. Bush told The New York Post.”
A Virginia-based conservative group called the National Legal and Policy Center filed a complaint against Omar last year, after it was disclosed that Omar and Mynett were lovers. The group sought an FEC investigation.
If the FEC does investigate, Omar and Mynett will have to prove that Omar is paying market-based rates for E Street Group’s services, without the prices being inflated “to fluff up their income,” Washington-based political lawyer Cleta Mitchell told the Post.
In 2019, Omar was accused of transferring funds to her boyfriend, Tim Mynett’s political consulting group, and failing to properly disclose those payments.
Accusations of immigration fraud….
Representative Blackburn’s calls for Omar’s resignation have dusted up social media posts about previous accusations that Omar married her brother to obtain U.S. citizenship. The New York Post reported:
Allegations that Elmi is Omar’s brother first emerged in a since-deleted post to the Somali Spot message board by a user named AbdiJohnson in 2016. Conservative blogger Scott Johnson picked up the claims on his Power Line blog, and they were later repeated by President Trump.
The Somali-community source personally observed Omar, Elmi and Hirsi all living together in the same family home in Cedar-Riverside with the couple’s two children.
The trio then decamped to North Dakota where Omar began studying political science at North Dakota State University in August 2009, the source said. Elmi also studied there for a period but dropped out, records show.
