Following the Science: Are Masks Useless Against Covid-19?

Other professionals say they might be dangerous

On December 3rd, president-elect Biden said that at his inauguration he will ask the American public to wear masks for 100 days, “Just 100, not forever — 100 days.” He added that the vaccine and masking will “drive down the numbers considerably.” The next day, the CDC went even further by recommending the “universal use of face masks.”

These pronouncements are made in the face of scientific research that tells us masking would not drive numbers down and might actually cause a surge in Covid-19 brain disease and are creating other problems – such as the recent uptick in “mask acne” caused by bacterial overgrowth.

In a little-noticed article posted on the Naturally Healthy News website on September 13th are the facts that federal and state bureaucracies have failed to tell us – evidence that medical facemasks are not only useless against the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19 disease, but that they are also dangerous.   In the article, Arthur Firstenberg recounts an amazing experiment in 1980 at the Severalls Surgical Unit in Colchester, England, and recorded in the annals of the Royal College of Surgeons.

The surgeons in that hospital decided not to wear surgical masks for six months, record the rate of wound infections, and then compare that rate to the same six-month period in the preceding four years. They learned that when they wore no masks during their operations, the rate of infection was less than half the rate when everyone in the operating theater wore a mask! The surgeons concluded, “It would appear that minimum contamination can best be achieved by not wearing a mask at all,” and that wearing a mask during surgery “is a standard procedure that could be abandoned.”

To be certain the Colchester experiment was not an anomaly. Firstenberg researched medical records before and after 1980. He found further proof that facemasks are essentially incapable of preventing the spread of infection and instead are “unsanitary objects that themselves spread bacteria and viruses.” Among the many articles he discovered are:

  • In Tunevall’s 1991 study, a general surgical team wore no masks in half of their surgeries for two years. After 1,537 operations performed with masks, the wound infection rate was 4.7%, while after 1,551 operations performed without masks, the wound infection rate was only 3.5%!
  • Carøe, in a 2014 review based on four studies and 6,006 patients, wrote that ‘none of the four studies found a difference in the number of post-operative infections whether you used a surgical mask or not.’
  • Da Zhou et al., reviewing the literature in 2015, concluded that ‘there is a lack of substantial evidence to support claims that facemasks protect either patient or surgeon from infectious contamination.

Firstenberg concluded by noting, “mandating masks has not kept death rates down anywhere. The 20 U.S. states that have never ordered people to wear facemasks, indoors or out, have dramatically lower Covid-19 death rates than the 30 states that have mandated masks. All 13 states that have death rates higher than 55 are states that have required the wearing of masks in all public places. It has not protected them.”

Not only is wearing a facemask useless, but it may also cause the SARS-CoV-2 virus to travel through the nose and cause Covid-19 disease of the brain! Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, MD referenced the olfactory nerves (the “smell nerves”) as a shortcut into the brain in a recent article in Technology News & Trends.   Citing a 1989 study in the journal Virology titled “Spread of a neurotropic murine coronavirus into the [central nervous system] via the trigeminal and olfactory nerves,” Dr. Blaylock wrote:

“In most instances, it enters the brain by way of the olfactory nerves (the “smell nerves”) which connect directly with the area of the brain dealing with recent memory and memory consolidation. By wearing a mask, the exhaled viruses will not be able to escape and will concentrate in the nasal passages, enter the olfactory nerves and travel into the brain.”

There is more about this in the article, “How is Coronavirus Getting Into the Brain?” at The Vaccine Reaction website.

Supporting all this research is a large scale, randomized, “gold standard” study conducted in Denmark from April to June 2020 as reported in The Federalist.  Using a sample size of more than 6,000 people, the Danish researchers found that there is no statistically significant difference between wearing a mask or not with regard to contracting Covid-19 disease.

In the face of such data, why then do we wear masks?

Some commentators have dubbed wearing masks as “virtue signaling,” meaning that a mask shows the wearer is piously concerned for the safety of others. That, despite facts showing masks, neither protect the wearers nor the people near them, and may even cause the wearer to inhale his own SARS-CoV-2 viruses and come down with Covid-19 brain disease.  The answer is simple — we are afraid. We have been made fearful by media that ignore science and instead trumpet “cases,” by Big Pharma anxious for the windfall from producing millions of vaccine doses, by government bureaucrats who own profitable patents, and by politicians, anxious to show they are doing something to protect us from a disease that had a total death rate in September 2020 in Australia of three-thousandths of 1%. Or Canada, with two-hundredths of 1%.

Our fear of what is simply a new “flu” – a disease we dealt with successfully for many years without lockdowns – has caused us to wear masks, to close our schools, to shutter our businesses and churches, to submit to unconstitutional orders from dictatorial governors and mayors and to suffer a congress that has indebted our nation’s economy to the point of financial collapse, with even more to come.

We have forgotten Ben Franklin’s maxim: “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

Barrington Declaration

[Editor’s note: Dr. Blaylock’s claim has been “fact-checked” a number of times – normally by writers who tend to qualify their claim that Blaylocks’s claims and concerns are “unsupported” based on a lot of “may” or “may not” wording. Here’s one example from Health Feedback. Those fact-checking articles generally repeat the mantra that the science is “settled,” while ignoring numerous reports and articles from scientists who disagree that the “science” is settled on many Covid-19 related points. For example, this article is titled “Europe’s Top Health Officials Say Masks Aren’t Helpful in Beating Covid-19” and the first sentence states: “The top medical experts in the world can’t decide if masks are helpful in reducing the spread of Covid-19 or just make things worse.” Many fact-checking articles also ignore the preceding, that – medical experts do not agree and that there are actually large numbers of scientists and medical professionals – for example, the Barrington Declaration experts – who publicly disagree with many of the mandates that have been imposed on the world to counter Covid-19. As of today, according to their website, that declaration has been signed by 41,890 medical practitioners and 13,796 medical & public health scientists.]
