Seizures of fentanyl are exploding nationwide…
As soon as Joe Biden got in the White House, he began with astonishing rapidity to dismantle the mechanisms Donald Trump had put in place to control illegal immigration coming across our southern border. The result was a tidal wave of humanity crossing into the United States and overwhelming all our efforts to control it.
That’s bad enough, but the ripple effects from Biden’s dereliction of duty are even worse. When you open the border and when our border patrol officers are crushed under a human tsunami of illegal immigrants, all sorts of opportunities appear for criminal networks to smuggle whatever they want across that same southern border.
The Mexican drug cartels have not missed this chance. They have run with it, and their drug of choice to pump north into the United States is fentanyl. Fatal in even the minutest of doses fentanyl smuggled in from Mexico is now devastating this country, and the body count from overdoses is skyrocketing.
According to Texas Governor Greg Abbott in 2020 the Texas Department of Public Safety seized 11 pounds of the drug, which is roughly equal to 2.4 million lethal doses. So far this year, Abbott said, DPS troopers have seized 95 pounds of fentanyl, which equals 21 million lethal doses. That is an 800% increase year over year.
Texas is no outlier. Seizures of fentanyl are exploding nationwide. As of April, of this year Customs and Border Protection (CBS) had already seized more fentanyl so far in 2021 than in all of 2020. In fact, the numbers weren’t even close. As of April, 6,494 pounds of fentanyl had been stopped at the border, compared to 4,776 pounds in all of 2020.
Keep in mind that even a minute quantity of fentanyl is fatal. The amount of the drug seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the last six months would be sufficient to kill 1.2 billion people, and CBP believes the vast majority of drugs are getting in without being stopped.
Deaths from fentanyl overdose were already exploding during the ill-advised COVID-19 lockdowns. More than 90,000 Americans died of overdoses between September 2019 and September 2020, and fentanyl was the leading cause of such deaths. Last year, drug overdose deaths rose by more than 27 percent in New York and more than 24 percent in Ohio.
Every indication is that the enormous quantity of fentanyl now entering the United States – across our open southern border – will make all previous overdose numbers pale by comparison. National statistics will not be in for some time, but preliminary local data is terrifying.
- Milwaukee County is on track to see an 11% percent increase in overdose deaths over 2020. Deaths in 2020 were already 30% higher than the year before.
- The Michigan Poison Center issued a warning on May 17, 2021, that 2021 overdoses in Cass and Van Buren counties had already surpassed the number of 2020 cases.
- In Eugene County, Oregon overdose deaths in April and May 2021 were already up 70% over those in 2020.
All across the nation, local and state authorities are looking at a catastrophe.
Mexico’s organized crime groups, which also control the illegal immigrant smuggling business, are having a field day. They charge poor migrants to smuggle them across the border and then having overwhelmed our border control officers with this human smokescreen, run massive quantities of deadly substances like fentanyl through the gaps in our defenses.
None of this was unforeseeable. In fact, all of it was completely predictable. The massive criminal enterprises that on any given day threaten to turn Mexico into a failed state and which routinely engage in levels of violence almost incomprehensible to normal men and women could not have been expected to do anything else. The temptation was just too great. The opportunity was just too lucrative.
Meanwhile, in the White House, Joe Biden stumbles his way from gaffe to gaffe even as the radical ideologues that form his administration press ahead with their mad agenda to transform the nation and remake the republic as some sort of Marxist state. They cannot be bothered with minor details like exploding overdose deaths and the crippling effect a flood of fentanyl will have on communities across the nation. They have a revolution to make.
The cartels don’t worry about such things. They worry about making cash and seizing territory. There is a doddering old fool in the White House with absolutely no idea what he is doing. That is terrifying for the country and will prove lethal for many of our citizens.
For the cartels, though, nothing could be better. They love Biden. He’s the drug dealers’ President.
