For eighteen months this nation has been rocked by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has disrupted our lives and personal relationships. It has shattered our economy. It has precipitated the largest assault on civil liberties in our history. And, yet, all these many months later a clear picture of how this event occurred and who is responsible remains elusive.
Let’s see what we can do to change that.
Virtually everyone agrees that the point of origin of the pandemic is Wuhan, China. The Chinese government claims that the virus came out of a “wet market” a place where live animals are sold as food. COVID-19 is one of a family of viruses known to infect bats. There are no bats sold as food in “wet markets” in Wuhan.
The Chinese government has never produced any evidence to support its “wet market” contention. Investigation of viral outbreaks relies heavily on contact tracing and identifying the first person infected, “patient zero.” The Chinese have never been able to produce this kind of data in reference to COVID-19.
Wuhan is also the home of multiple Chinese biological research labs. One of these is China’s premier BSL-4 research lab – the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). Extensive work has been done at this facility on coronaviruses like COVID-19, which occur in bats. The bats in question are not native to the region around Wuhan. Researchers travel hundreds of miles to other parts of China to capture bats in large numbers and then transport them back to Wuhan for study.
Lab procedures at the Wuhan lab were known to be sloppy and dangerous. As detailed in a recent Congressional report on the origins of the virus, senior Chinese scientific personnel expressed concerns about safety at Chinese labs in the summer of 2019 before the pandemic began. Bat bites of researchers were so common a log was kept to track them. Researchers going into caves to collect bats were often covered in bat urine and feces.
There were multiple requests for maintenance at the WIV, including in a new facility that had been operational for only a short time. Some of those requests included maintenance on “environmental air disinfection system” and the “hazardous waste treatment system.”
In 2018, U.S. State Department officials in Wuhan sent cables to Washington, D.C. highlighting concerns with safety issues at the WIV. The cables reported that scientists at the WIV noted “a serious shortage of appropriately trained technicians and investigators needed to safely operate this high-containment laboratory.”
All indications are that the COVID-19 first began to spread through the city of Wuhan as early as August or September 2019. Chinese Communist Party officials took their virus database offline in the middle of the night about this time and suddenly began to seek additional funding for security. Hospitals in the Wuhan area also began to fill with patients with symptoms similar to COVID-19.
Scientists at the WIV were conducting gain-of-function research at BSL-2 and BSL-3 safety levels. A BSL-2 lab has the same safety protocols as a dentist’s office. Gain of function research is work specifically designed to make a virus more communicable and more dangerous to humans.
There is in China no meaningful distinction between civilian and military research. The Chinese have never abandoned biological warfare. Military researchers were present in the WIV at the time of the outbreak of the pandemic.
Work at the WIV was funded in part by American taxpayer’s dollars. This money came from Dr. Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. It was funneled through an outfit called EcoHealth Alliance run by an individual named Peter Daszak.
The bat coronavirus grant provided EcoHealth Alliance with a total of $3.1 million, including $599,000 that the Wuhan Institute of Virology used in part to identify and alter bat coronaviruses likely to infect humans. The dangers of the gain of function research were well known at the time the funding was provided. The grant proposal acknowledged some of those dangers: “Fieldwork involves the highest risk of exposure to SARS or other CoVs, while working in caves with high bat density overhead and the potential for fecal dust to be inhaled.”
Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University, has stated that “The viruses they constructed were tested for their ability to infect mice that were engineered to display human type receptors on their cell.” Ebright also said the documents make it clear that two different types of novel coronaviruses were able to infect humanized mice. The specific purpose of the work funded by American citizens via EcoHealth Alliance was, in short, to make viruses that were more dangerous to humans than those occurring in nature.
Fauci knew all of this at the time. It was spelled out in the documentation provided to secure the grant that funded the work. Yet, he stayed silent about it all through the pandemic even looking the other way when Daszak, desperate to evade responsibility, actively attempted to discredit anyone who suggested the virus came out of a lab. Fauci continues to maintain this position to this day, accusing anyone who questions him, including Senator Rand Paul of lying and besmirching his reputation.
The evidence does not just suggest strongly that the virus escaped from a lab. It shows that is very likely manmade and the deliberate result of precisely the kind of gain of function research Fauci was funding. Writing in the Wall Street Journal in June of this year, two scientists Dr. Steven Quay and Richard Muller noted specific aspects of the structure of the virus, which are essentially never seen in nature, but which are characteristic of human intervention and manipulation.
Quay and Muller, both researchers at Berkeley, noted that of the 36 possible genome pairings that can produce two arginine amino acids in a row, which results in boosting a virus’ lethality, the one most commonly used in gain-of-function research is CGG-CGG, or double CGG. They also noted that this pairing, which is found in COVID-19 has never been found naturally. It is only seen in organisms that have been genetically engineered by humans.
“Proponents of zoonotic origin must explain why the novel coronavirus, when it mutated or recombined, happened to pick its least favorite combination, the double CGG,” Quay and Muller wrote. “Why did it replicate the choice the lab’s gain-of-function researchers would have made?
None of that should have been a surprise to Fauci. As early as January 31, 2020, in an email from U.S. virus researcher Kristian Andersen, Fauci was told the same thing. Andersen, who runs a viral genomics lab at Scripps Research in La Jolla, Calif., wrote, “The unusual features of the virus make up a really small part of the genome (<0.1%) so one has to look really closely at all the sequences to see that some of the features (potentially) look engineered,” he wrote. Andersen also noted that he and others “all find the genome inconsistent with expectations from evolutionary theory.”
Eighteen months ago, we were as a nation blindsided by this pandemic. Fauci was not. He had been for years funneling money to a Chinese lab working on creating precisely the monster that we now faced. The point of origin of the disease, its structure and its communicability all pointed to only one conclusion. COVID-19 was made in a Chinese lab and then released, intentionally or by human error on the world.
What Dr. Fauci should have done at that point was to reveal everything and anything he knew about the origins of the disease and provide the nation with the best possible chance of getting ahead of the pandemic and understanding how to control it. He did not. He lied. He covered up. He put his own personal reputation and position ahead of the lives of his countrymen.
Incredibly, Fauci not only retains his position but continues to be the face of our public health response to the pandemic. Seemingly immune to accountability, he continues to attempt to conceal the truth to this day. If there is any shred of integrity left anywhere in the federal government, that should end, and it should end today. Fauci should be fired. Federal charges against him should be filed, and we ought to lay out the whole ugly truth about what happened in Wuhan.
